A PRAYER WHILE WAITING

How long, O Lord,
how long must I wait?
The minutes tick by
—each one seems like an hour
—each hour like a day.
Time drags on as I watch and wait.
Anxious thoughts cross my mind;
boredom is my constant companion.
I look for signs of hope,
for a light at the end of the tunnel.
The tunnel seems so long;
I don’t know
how far through it I’ve come,
but I know there’s no turning back.
I can only go forward or stay stuck—
marking time—like now.
I need that light, Lord,
that hope to keep me going forward
and I need patience, too,
to help me mark time when
things seem to be at a standstill.
I need constant reminders that
a lot of change or growth can occur
when nothing seems to be happening
—like now.
Help me to hang in there and
to see your light
in the darkness of anxiety,
boredom and frustration.

Amen
