PRAYERS – SUNDAY 10TH OCTOBER 2010 – MENTAL HEALTH WEEK.

As we bring our Prayers of the people today we acknowledge that we are still uninformed about mental illness and how it impacts persons and their families. Because of this lack of knowledge and understanding we sometimes find ourselves separated from our sisters and brothers with mental illness, and their families. God sees the ignorance and injustice that divides and separates people struggling with mental illness and weeps with us. May we all come to understand the interconnectedness of mind, body and spirit in bringing about health and wholeness.

Let us pray

God of Beauty and Bounty,
YOU hung the stars in the heavens and in the ocean depths your handiwork is found;
Hear our prayers for the preservation of the earth. We pray for places where waters are polluted and land spoiled; for creatures who are hunted or whose habitats are destroyed,
Teach us to cherish the wonders of creation and to share more justly the riches you provide.
Bountiful God, for all your good gifts to us, We give you thanks and Praise.
YOU turned sea into dry land and delivered your people from bondage and danger:

Hear our prayers for the peoples of the world. We pray for those still bound in slavery, those who suffer oppression; For those whose lands are invaded, for the dispossessed and refugee.
Teach us to live in harmony, so that all your people may enjoy dignity and freedom
Bountiful God, for all your good gifts to us, We give you thanks and Praise.
YOU offer salvation to all your people and you call us into the company of all believers;

Hear our prayers for the ministry and mission of your church. For all who worship or minister in this congregation Teach us to entrust our lives to you, to proclaim to others the good news of your grace and to become a welcoming community. Bountiful God, for all your good gifts to us, we give you thanks and praise. YOU desire wholeness for your people and you have mercy when we ask for healing.

Hear our prayers for those who suffer, for all in trouble or in need, for those whom we marginalize, for AIDS sufferers, the elderly ; for the sick and dying , all who are in pain and especially today, the mentally ill. We come as consumers, family members, friends, co-workers and mental health professionals because we believe that you love each of us just as we are and you walk with us on our individual journeys through life. We pray to our God, creator and liberator for divine guidance to live in fuller union with Him, ourselves and all those with mental illness. Teach us to have courage to face the challenges and open us today to the many ways you are already working in our midst. Help us to identify mental illness as the disease it is, that we might have courage and wisdom in the face of ignorance and stigma. Inspire us as we seek to overcome fear, acquire knowledge and advocate for compassionate and enlightened treatment and services. Lead us as a community of faith to find ways to be inclusive of persons living with mental illness. Be with doctors, therapists, researchers, social workers and all those seeking to be advocates for care and compassion. We pray we will go forward with a renewed sense of Your steadfast love reminding us to share the light of love and service for those living with mental illness.

Teach us to care for one another; to bring to others your compassion and comfort and teach us to follow in faith the example of Jesus so that our lives may be acceptable in your eyes.

God of Beauty and Bounty, for all your good gifts to us, We give you thanks and praise.

Amen
